Tamara Johnston, founder of Thai Street Paws Rescue, is used to seeing stray dogs every day. But one pup she came across looked much worse than the rest.

She stopped at a local shop for a drink when she noticed a two-month-old puppy on the road. The poor little pup was emaciated, yet his stomach was bloated. He was also covered in fleas and ticks, and was very nervous.

Locals told Johnston that his mom wasn’t in the area and that his sister had recently been hit and killed by a car. The puppy was now all alone and hung around the area, trying to find any food scraps he could to survive.

Without hesitation, Johnston carried the dog to her car and brought him to the vet. The pup, now named Basil, snuggled up against her during the car ride. He finally knew he was safe.

“I honestly believe it was a huge relief for him,” Johnston told The Dodo. “It was almost like he knew someone was going to help him. He didn’t move — he just snuggled into my arms and fell asleep. He knew he was safe.”

The vet gave him fluids and medications to help give his little weak body some energy. He will get vaccinated and neutered and will remain under Johnston’s care until he is ready for adoption.

Basil is now safe and he knows it. He is not the weak, terrified puppy he once was. Now he is healthy and confident, thanks to Johnston!
