Roughly two years ago, a kindhearted man named Randy Etter met his best friend in the whole world, his beloved dog Gemini, and now he is doing everything he can to save his dog’s life.
Gemini is a pit bull that is sweeter than pie and has been there for his human through thick and thin, always making sure to keep a smile on his face even in the worst of times.
So, when he found out his sweet dog’s life was on the line, he was determined to do whatever it took to help get Gemini better.
Just a little over a month ago, Gemini was a happy, bouncing, fun-loving dog who was completely full of life.
The sweet pit loves everybody, including children, and he was having a fun play session with Randy’s girlfriend’s baby girl. The adorable pair were playing a game where the little girl tossed her bottle out from her playpen toward Gemini, who would quickly grab it up off the floor. Randy would snatch it right back from Gemini’s smiling mouth and clean it up before handing it off to the girl.
Although it seemed like the trio had the whole routine down pat, without Randy’s realizing it, his young pit bull had somehow managed to chew the top from the bottle before he’d taken it back from him at some point during the game.
After the game was over, the family carried on with their daily lives until poor Gemini started showing signs that something was really off.
“He just started to slow down and I didn’t think that was normal, just laying beside me and following me everywhere. I just felt like he was saying, ‘Help me’,” Randy recalls in an interview with The Dodo.
At first, Randy just kept a close watch over Gemini, but unfortunately, things were only about to get worse for the poor sweet dog.
Gemini began throwing up everywhere constantly. The sick pittie couldn’t keep himself from puking and Randy knew without a doubt that he needed emergency medical attention.
Without thinking twice, the worried dog owner raced Gemini to the vet, praying that his life wasn’t on the line and that he was just sick and it would go away.
Tragically, none of the vet offices Randy visited were able to pinpoint what was going on with his dog and a terrified Randy put his entire life on hold to find his beloved bestie the help he so desperately needed.
“I lost my job driving vet to vet to vet and it just seemed like I wasn’t gonna get anywhere or get him the help he needed in time. It was truly one of the scariest things I had to deal with,” said Etter.
After paying visits and fees to nearly every vet in his area, Randy had finally found a vet that was as determined as Randy to get to the root of the problem.
The vet confirmed that Gemini had swallowed something that was now creating a blockage in his body.
The good news was that it was something that could be fixed with surgery. The bad news was that it was incredibly expensive.
The recently unemployed Randy felt his heart sink as the vet told him he would need to fork over $4,500 to get Gemini the surgery he needed to save his life.
Even though Randy had nowhere near that amount of money, he refused to give up on saving Gemini. With no other way of coming up with the money in time to save his dog, Randy put his car up for sale online to make some quick cash.
“I was gonna spend every dollar made from the car sale on his surgery. I would be devastated if I lost my best friend,” he says.
A friend who saw Randy’s post desperately trying to sell his car for far less than it was worth just to raise some of the money needed to save Gemini, amazingly loaned Randy $2,000.
While the gesture was incredibly generous and definitely helpful, it was still $2,500 shy of what it would take to get Gemini better.
Then a local charity got wind of this man’s fight to save his dog’s life and stepped up to the plate to help in a very big way! The Street Outreach Animal Response (S.O.A.R. Initiative) couldn’t stand the thought of Randy having his closest friend ripped away from him because he couldn’t afford the surgery.
The charity started aggressively sharing Randy and Gemini’s story, and the amazing staff was able to raise $3,000 in donated funds. The donors were all complete strangers, and yet their hearts were brimming over with compassion for bonded best friends.
Between what Randy was able to borrow and with the huge blessing of donations, Randy was able to pay for Gemini’s surgery, and Gemini handled it like a champ!
Gemini’s healing is coming along great, and Randy is finally starting to heal a little from the trauma of the entire ordeal himself.
The relieved dog dad is overwhelmed with sheer gratitude that so many people that don’t know either one of them paid out of their own wallets for Gemini’s life-saving surgery.
“It means the world to me. He’s my best friend. He’s always there for me, I just wanted to be able to return the favor and be there for him.”
Thanks to all of the wonderful people who opened up their hearts to Randy and Gemini’s story, this man was able to keep his word and save Gemini’s life. That’s how amazing all of you dog lovers are!
