A mother dog and her nine puppies were abandoned in a sealed-up box so that they couldn’t escape. The box was found by a Good Samaritan at the Puntzi Lake Landfill in British Columbia, Canada, who stumbled upon it and decided to inspect it. And it’s a good thing they did.
The mama was super thin, and her pups were only about a week old. She was struggling to provide for her family because of the neglect. The Good Samaritan immediately took them to a local vet where they stayed for the night before being transferred to the British Columbia Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (BC SPCA).
With no foster families available at that time, the BC SPCA’s Quesnel and District branch staff took the dog family in to care for them in every way they could.
The mama was named Casey, and she’s done everything in her power to care for her pups since arriving to the shelter. Her better health has allowed her to better provide for the young ones. Mom’s still a little hesitant and nervous around the other shelter animals because of everything she’s been through in life. But she’s very sweet once she warms up to someone.
Casey and her puppies won’t be put up for adoption until the little ones are at least 7 weeks old and completely healthy. In the meantime, the BC SPCA is working to figure out who abandoned this family in such a cruel act.
“There is help available for pet guardians who are struggling to care for their animals,” wrote Lorie Chortyk, the BC SPCA’s general manager of communications. “They can reach out to a local rescue or the SPCA instead of abandoning them.”
