When some workers were renovating a house in Little Haiti, Miami, one of the workers accidently tripped the house’s security alarm. The blaring alarm turned out to be a miracle in disguise as it caused the dog in the neighboring house to stand up and take a look. This dog – an American Bulldog named Frances, caught the eye of one of the workers, Claire Morera.

Even from that distance, Claire was shocked to see the condition the dog was in. She went over to investigate and found Frances tethered to the landing with a 5-pound chain, and covered in ticks. She also looked very weak and had infections in both her eyes. Nobody seemed to be at home.
Claire took some pictures and posted them on her Facebook, requesting help in rescuing Frances. A local rescue group called 100+ Abandoned dogs of Everglades Florida answered her call. Jan Stenger, one of the volunteers for the group couldn’t believe the condition Frances was in, and decided to jump in.

When she reached the house, Jan was in for the shock of her life. She had never seen a dog in such a bad shape. It was so bad that they couldn’t even get the chain off of Frances’s neck. Apparently Frances’s owner had passed away a few weeks ago and she had been chained there ever since.

The group decided to leave the chain around her neck for the time being and rushed Frances to the animal hospital. Since they didn’t have a bolt cutter, it took them a few hours to get the chain off her neck. When they did, it was the first time Frances wagged her tail!

Frances then spent 8 hours in the tub having the ticks removed. She had thousands of ticks on her, but thankfully they hadn’t caused any infections.
But there was bad news. Frances’s eyes were so infected that both her eyes had to be removed. Having addressed all her health concerns, the rescuers began her on a healthy diet and she soon started gaining good weight.

Jan got so attached to Frances that she decided to adopt the blind pooch herself. Frances now lives with Jan and smiles all the time.

But her favorite thing in the whole world is cuddling up to her mom (and rescuer) Jan.
