A Giant Schnauzer, the first ever to be trained for police work in Canada, has passed away. A Tweet went out on the @SaskatoonPolice K9 Unit account stating, “With heavy hearts we regret to inform you that retired #psdtyr has passed away. We thank him for his years of dedication to serving our community.”

Although there is no indication of how he died or the age of the dog, named Tyr, his presence will be sorely missed.

On Facebook, they shared, “Our thoughts are with his handler and their family, and thank them for their dedication to keeping our community safe.”

According to the dog’s handler, Const. Chad Malanowich,  Tyr was social but when it came to work, he was all business. Tyr graduated in September of 2012 from the canine officer training program.

Giant Schnauzers have been used overseas for many years in police work, but Tyr was the first of his kind in Canada.

Our condolences to all affected by the passing of Tyr. You can watch a story about the sweet dog in the video below.
