Two Pit Bulls, later to be called Layla and Gracie were found dumped in the park, just outside Philadelphia, at the time people thought they were on the verge of dying…

Gracie was completely cold to the touch and Layla was curled up in a tight ball next to her like she was guarding her best pal!

Officer Russ ‘Wolf’ Harper said: “She would not leave her side”

“Anytime someone tried to get close, her friend tried to cover the other … It was almost like she was going to take the beating for the other one.”

Russ is a tall guy with tattoos down his arms, a full beard with a skinhead but he has a special way with dogs, he can just communicate with them on another level, and calm them down…

When he saw the two dogs he tried to calm them down, there at the park, He uses a special skill he calls his 10-year-old girly voice…

He said:

“I got down on my knees and called in my girly 10-year-old voice …And Layla comes over to me with her tail wagging but her eyes clenched like she thought she might get hit.”

With quite some coaxing she came towards Russ and let him pet her nose and her head then shot back to the side of her friend.

Russ was, with considerable effort, able to get the both of them to let him put his heavy vest on them to keep them warm. He scooped them up and took them straight to the vet, he prepared himself for bad news.

Pit Bulls

Gracie was really cold and so weak, she can hardly open her eyes even. Russ thought that she might have to be put to sleep, both dags has immense scaring and were really thin, staved half to death!

IT was pretty obvious to anyone and especially Russ that the dogs had been used for fighting all their lives, with the amounts of wounds they had on their bodies.

Russ said:

“Some are very old and some are very fresh …They both had fresh bite wounds on them … They’re only about 2 years old, and they’ve only known abuse, they’ve only known fighting.”

He went on to say:

“Gracie was dying …The vet gave her fluids and started warming her up.”

Russ has devoted himself to recusing dogs for many years, he even trained as a law enforcement officer so he could be first on the scene when police get these reports of abandoned animals!

Russ said:

“Gateway crimes are – animal abuse, including child abuse, domestic violence, drugs, guns…”

The police are not usually trained to deal with animals and cruelty to animals but Russ was different, he knew exactly what to do, he lived for it. In fact, he started Justice Rescue with the aim to fill this gap of knowledge!

They have trained in law enforcement and also being special humane officers, they are certified in crime scene investigation. They help to find abusers and provide district attorneys with evidence.

Russ has helped to bust up dog fighting rings and he didn’t need to wait for canine victims to turn up first.

Just to surprise everyone Gracie stated to get much stronger, wow!

Russ said:

“Gracie saw me and actually stood up …She started eating out of my hand. She remembered me … And she wanted to follow me around. I sat down and she sat right on my lap.”

The next day she rebounded and crashed, she then needed special care, but thankfully she recovered and was ok, but still, in bad shape, and she had a long way to go still.

Russ said that the two of them, even though all that they must have gone through they are both loving and sweet dogs, they are affectionate and don’t know who to love.

Layla and Gracie will have to stay with the vet at least another week, then they will go to basic training and they will have help to rehabilitate and learn to trust humans again.

When they are ready and they have gone through this process they will be ready to adopt by a loving forever home.

They bonded so closely as they had no one else to boned with, they almost seem in awe that they have been rescued and they are now safe…
